Workflow automation: choose a useful first process

Automation · · WebLab Corp editorial

Use a clear process map, measurable outcomes, and exception handling to scope a practical first automation project.

Make the process explicit

IBM describes workflow automation as using software to carry out tasks and route work according to defined rules. It can connect activities across a process. The opportunity is not simply to automate individual clicks, but to make the handoff between people and systems more consistent.

Choose the first release deliberately

WebLab Corp's implementation perspective is to start with one repeated process whose inputs and owner are clear. Describe the desired result and the exceptions. Avoid expanding the scope before the team can explain how the first flow should behave.

Review exceptions alongside the happy path

Decide when automation should stop, who receives an exception, and what evidence is retained. Compare the new workflow with the original process using a measure your team understands. A useful release should be operable and reviewable, not merely demonstrable.
